The second generation of Eviyos now offers 25,600 individually controllable pixels on a footprint of 40 mm². The aim is not only to efficiently illuminate streets. Vehicles should also be able to communicate with each other using the pixel LEDs.

More than two years have passed since Osram introduced the world's first hybrid LED headlamp in the Eviyos project. With the help of 1024 individually controllable pixels on a footprint of 4 mm x 4 mm, it was capable of illuminating the road. Osram has now introduced the second generation of Eviyos. The developers have increased the number of pixels by a factor of 25 to 25,600.

A key feature of the Eviyos family is that only the pixels that are needed for the situation are lit up. Especially with regard to electric vehicles it is a central point. This is where energy should be saved.

Multiple pixel LEDs are combinable

Currently, the second generation of Eviyos is still under development - but it already shows today how automotive lighting will change in the coming years. In the future, headlights will be able to do more than just light the way. It can illuminate or fade out a large area in front of the vehicle very precisely. Always suitable for the current driving situation. The technology also opens the door to completely new fields of application beyond classic lighting. For example, several Eviyos can be combined with each other or with other conventional LEDs.

Wolfgang Lex, Vice President and General Manager Automotive at Osram Opto Semiconductors, explains what is possible with the new generation of pixel headlamps: "In future, vehicles will be able to visually transmit warning notices or symbols to the occupants of the vehicle or other road users. In addition, so-called welcome scenarios are to be made possible in order to greet the driver as soon as he comes close to the vehicle. Pixel headlamps are part of the Osram OS strategy to equip the automotive industry with clever LED developments.

Aside from the high resolution of the second generation of Eviyos, manufacturer Osram OS also expects better energy efficiency and less installation space. The multi-pixel LED requires a footprint of 40 mm².

The first generation of the hybrid LED with 1024 pixels is scheduled for market launch in early 2020. The second generation with 25,600 pixels will then be available in 2023.
